Hospitality is a growing industry, especially in Ayrshire. Those who work in the industry have an important part to play making sure that visitors have a tremendous experience.
We recently visited Garfield’s Tapas and Wine Bar in Ardrossan to meet with Chef Darren Fisher and General Catering Assistant’s Jodie McNamaraa and Chloe Mcgovern. We met with them to hear all about careers in the hospitality industry and how they got to where they are today.
Garfield’s Tapas & Wine Bar is a family run business in the heart of Ardrossan. Opening in 2011 the business has expanded and cultivated a good reputation in the local area and across Ayrshire. Garfield’s offer a superb selection of wines, beers and spirits from around the globe; authentic Spanish and Scottish cuisine, coffee and patisserie, fresh homemade Tapas which is freshly made every day on the premises. The range of tapas dishes combine traditional Spanish classics like paella, patatas bravas and tortilla with fusion dishes using the finest Scottish & Spanish ingredients.
As well as being passionate about their business, Garfield’s are passionate about helping equip young people with life skills and the skills that are needed to work in the hospitality industry.
Chef Darren Fisher started out his career at 15 years old in the hospitality industry and studied at college for 6 months. Darren has been working in hospitality for 13 years now and the skills that he has learned during this time he has passed on to the young people who are now working in the business. He says that the skills you learn from being in the hospitality industry are skills that you can take with you anywhere in the world.
During our visit we met with 16 year old Jodie and Chloe who gave us an insight into what they do, why they work in the hospitality industry, and some great advice for anyone who may be considering a career in hospitality.
General Catering Assistant, Jodie McNamaraa works in the waitressing area serving food and drinks to customers and also helps other members of staff in the kitchen cooking food. Working in hospitality has developed Jodie’s confidence she has learned lots of new skills and learned to work with other people not only her own age but of all different ages. Jodie has career aspirations to work in the catering industry and feels that her experience within Garfield’s has definitely confirmed this as the ideal field of work for her.

Chloe Mcgovern, who is also a General Catering Assistant at Garfield’s, works around the kitchen helping to collect ingredients for the chefs. Chloe also works in the waitressing area serving food and drinks to customers as well as helping out with stock. Chloe explained that working at Garfield’s has grown her confidence and she has learned customer service skills.
