Faye Ronald, S4 pupil at Stewarton Academy, completed her weeks work experience placement at UTC in Prestwick. Here’s what she has to say.
My name is Faye Ronald and I am in S4 at Stewarton Academy. I had an interest in the Engineering and Physics fields before I attended my work experience at UTC but wanted to find out more.
During my week at UTC I experienced what it was like to work in many different departments across the company. I had a training day on the Monday and for the rest of the week I spent time in the logistics department, mechanical repair team, thrust reversers, inlets and engineering design team. I found this great as I was able to experience all the different departments rather than just one. Personally I found the mechanical repair team and the design engineering the most interesting!
I now have a much better understanding of how a company like UTC works, how all the different departments connect to each other within the company and what a full working week feels like! Throughout my week I also found out lots of information about different aeroplane components and the different roles within the work force. The most challenging part of my week was having to get up at 6am every morning but I suppose it wouldn’t be work experience without an early rise!
I had also been a little bit apprehensive about working in a predominantly male environment but I didn’t need to worry because they were all extremely friendly and had brilliant banter! The experience has definitely opened my eyes to the different career paths within the aerospace industry and I now have a clearer picture of what I would like to do when I am older. I highly recommend going out on a work placement if you get the chance as it is a great opportunity and there is always something to learn.
